This print shows another magnificent summer sunset over the Isle of Arran as seen from Troon on the west coast of Scotland. Arran has been a tremendous source of inspiration for my painting as can be seen from the different views on my website. The sky, all year round, is ever changing and some of the summer sunsets are incredibly dramatic. It can be frustrating at times not being able to capture the light with paint on canvas but my quest goes on! The sea too is never the same from one day to the next and, on calm, balmy summer evenings the reflections in the water are mesmerising.
The silhouette of Arran, as seen from the Ayrshire coast, is said to resemble a reclining human figure and has been nicknamed ‘The Sleeping Warrior’. There are various interpretations of which part of the land resembles which part of the ‘Warrior’ so no one really knows for sure.
Arran, with its miles of coastline, sheltered beaches, woods and forests and mountain peaks, is known as ‘Scotland in miniature’. It is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde with Goat Fell (or Goatfell as preferred by the locals) measuring 874 metres or 2,867 feet at its highest point. Goat Fell, is known as a ‘Corbett’ as it is between 2,500 and 3,000 feet in height. Nestling in the Goatfell mountain range is Glen Rosa, home of the Blue Pool, a popular spot for wild swimmers.
Although most of the views I’ve painted of Arran are from the Ayrshire coast, I also have plans to paint some of the beauty spots on the island like Glen Rosa or Sannox Bay with its views over towards Bute.
