Glasgow School of Art is based in a few different buildings in Renfrew Street, Glasgow, the most famous of which was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh between 1896 and 1909. It is built in the style of British Art Nouveau and as well as being one of Glasgow’s iconic landmarks it is one of Britain’s most influential buildings.
The building combines Mackintosh’s love of nature along with what he saw on his travels to Europe and Italy. He wanted a harmonious environment for both students and teachers and Thomas Howarth, the architectural historian and academic who was Mackintosh’s biographer, described the building as follows:
‘A building designed primarily to fulfill its purpose well, with, of course, some artist’s licence… It was the, and remains, Mackintosh’s most representative work and it is undoubtedly his most important contribution to the New Movement’.
Tragically, the building caught fire in May 2014 destroying the iconic library and, while under restoration, it caught fire again in 2018, leaving the building as a burnt out shell.
