This print is from a pen and ink illustration I made and shows the cute and cuddly Hairy Horny Haggis which humans believe has been extinct for centuries. However, they thrive in unseen places like Glen Wheesht going secretly about their business. They grow to a height of 75 cm and weigh about 18 kgs and, as Scotland’s rarest beastie, they are very difficult to track as they move silently and are masters of camouflage.

Their predators have included humans and Golden Eagles which explains why historically, Haggis live in woodlands where they are sheltered from aerial attacks and have numerous ground level hiding places. They have a very structured social hierarchy consisting of a chieftain, a group of elders, other adults and finally the hogs. Hairy Horny Haggis yearn for the quiet life. Their nests are called ‘Hamelldaemes’ and are always shaped like quaichs, the traditional Scottish drinking cup of friendship. Every Hamelldaeme is underground and on three levels (for added security from a ‘digging out’ attack).

Hairy Horny Haggis breed all year round and the collective name for them is a ‘Clan’. They are vegetarian, excellent organic farmers and they could possibly be domesticated as a human pet, if people only knew they existed.
