I’ve always loved the comical, colourful look of puffins, and this single puffin exudes a sense of quiet confidence and charm. Often affectionately known as the "clowns of the sea," puffins are instantly recognisable by their vibrant bills and unique markings.

I once took a boat trip to the island of Staffa on the west coast of Scotland, where I had the unforgettable experience of puffins walking right up to me as I sat on the grass. The boat’s skipper explained that the puffins felt safe near humans because gulls, which prey on them, avoided people. This moment inspired my fascination with these delightful birds.

Puffins are remarkable creatures. Their brightly coloured bills in summer are part of their appeal, though they change colour throughout the year. They’re incredible swimmers, diving deep to gather sandeels and other small fish for their chicks. Known for their loyalty, puffins often mate for life, further adding to their charm.
